Kazakhstan weather is classified as continental and arid, and is characterized by its hot summers and extremely bitterly cold winters. Another distinct feature of weather in Kazakhstan is the great fluctuation in temperatures that differ depending on the regional area.
There are three major factors that influence the patterns of Kazakhstan weather: the seclusion of it from the oceans, its size, and the locality between Asia and Siberia, where air mass collision of the cold north and the hot south meet.
The best time to visit Kazakhstan is during the spring season which runs between April and June. In the south regions of the country, spring arrives as early as February, then slowly makes its way to the north by when temperatures are at their most pleasant, hovering between 16-18C. The southern regions of Kazakhstan begin their spring planting ahead of the northern regions, which are still covered in ice. During spring the desert is in bloom and the colors are an amazing array of shades.
Summer weather in Kazakhstan is hot, beginning in May and lasting approximately for five months. Early summer experiences burly winds and thunderstorms. Kazakhstan weather in the western plains is predominantly dry and hot, while the easterly plains are wet but warm.
In the northern part of the country, air temperatures reach 38C, and in the south 46C with low humidity levels. The hottest months inland are July while August is the hottest in the mountainous regions. While the rest of the country is burning up in the summer heat, the mountains are at their best. In the northern regions daily average temperatures are 21°C, and between 27°C and as high as 32°C in the south. June and September are the best months for longer climbing tours and hikes in the mountains of Tien Shan.
Autumn is another time when Kazakhstan weather is quite pleasant. The golden shades of autumn (September and October) also signify harvest season and the local market stalls sell the freshest of local produce. In the desert regions you will experience warm dry weather, in the mountainous regions Kazakhstan weather is misty and wet with snow falling earlier than the desert areas.
Kazakhstan weather in winter is perfectly white, and covered in fluffy snow from as early as November in the north, and can remain for as long as five months. Snowfall blanketing is around 30cm, January is the coldest month of the year. The north east regions see temperatures plummet to a numbing -54C, while southern regions fall below -30C.
